Most homes in Monroe, Michigan have a full basement, and a lot of them have a narrow staircase and a turn at the landing. That is why most junk removal calls here are really carry-out jobs. We haul furniture, appliances, mattresses, hot tubs, sheds and whole-house cleanouts out of Monroe homes and businesses, for a flat price quoted before anything moves.

What the City of Monroe picks up, and what it doesn’t

The city sets its curbside rules on its own garbage, recycling and yard waste page. As of October 2026, for bulk items:

  • Two bulk items per week per residential property. The items the city accepts are listed in its residential brochure.
  • You have to schedule it. Call the Department of Public Services at 734-384-9125 no later than noon on Thursday. Bulk items are collected on Fridays, or Saturdays in the six holiday weeks.
  • Residential properties only. The city’s bulk collection is not for businesses.
  • Mattresses must be completely wrapped in plastic and taped shut.
  • No loose bags. Regular trash goes in the 96-gallon cart, and loose bags have not been allowed since August 31, 2023.

Rules like these change, so confirm with the city before you set anything out. The township areas around Monroe have their own arrangements, so the city’s page only covers the City of Monroe.

If you only have one or two light items and can wait for a Friday, the city route is free or close to it. It stops working when there is more than that, when it is heavy or in the basement, or when the date matters.

Paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste

None of that can go in a junk removal load, and it can’t go in the city’s bulk pickup either. Monroe County runs four household hazardous waste collection events a year. They are free, open to Monroe County residents only, limited to households (no business waste), and items must come in their original containers. If you are clearing a garage, set that pile aside for the next event. Our garage cleanout guide has the full list of what goes where.
